Sorry for the short notice in our date change, however, things happen. We need you to help us spread the word (forward my email) to any parent/player/Canes Fan that you know interested in learning more about what's ahead in the coming months. This is an "exciting" time for Canes Baseball, so please adjust your schedule.

A few items on the agenda: tryouts, upcoming 2011 season, sponsorship (deadline February 1 - bring any checks you might have), 2011 Hurricane Alley Reserved Seating, Season Kickoff Cookout, Team of the Decade, etc.

Cartersville defeated Heritage (Conyers) 10 - 3 on a very cold Thursday night at Richard Bell field. The Canes sent 6 quality pitchers to the mound to continue to get work to hold Heritage to 3 runs.

Cartersville hitters largely took advantage of errors and walks by the pitching of Heritage. The Canes where led by RF Trey Dickson, with a 2-3 night.

Cartersville travels to Collins Hill Saturday for a 1pm start.

Canes take the win in Lumpkin County 9 - 3 as a lot of new faces take the field this year. The Canes sent a stable full of pitchers to the mound to sharpen up for the non region schedule coming up. Canes face Heritage (Conyers) at Richard Bell Field Thursday Feb 25th at 5:55pm.

Canes Battle Heritage and drop first one, Headed for LaGrange

The Georgia Dugout Club's (GDC) Preseason projected #1's in AAA and AAAA played last night at Heritage High School in Conyers, GA. Heritage (8AAAA) pitched their ace, Anthony Bazzani, a GDC Preseason All-State First Team pitcher who went 4 Innings. Due to the approaching LaGrange Tournament which begins tomorrow, Cartersville (6AAA) used 5 pitchers in this order (A Clark 1.0, L Mauldin 2.0, J Croft 1.0, H Battle 1.0, and A Thurman 1.0).

The Canes held a 4-2 lead in the 5th but gave up 5 runs in the bottom of the inning after loading the bases with a BB, HP, BB to the 8,9,1 hitters. Heritage had 3 hits in the inning (1B, 1B, 2B) and brought 9 batters to the plate. The Canes stayed with their plan and allowed their pitcher to complete the inning. Heritage had 6 total hits in the game and scored runs in the 3rd (1), 4th (1), and 5th (5). Cartersville scored 4 runs in the game on 6 hits scoring runs in the 1st (1) and 5th (3). Bridges, Stewart, Boling, Croft, Thurman, and Payne had hits for the Canes. Tate reached base on his first two plate appearances via a HP. After a leadoff hit by Boling in the 7th then loading the bases, the Canes failed to score.

The Canes depart Friday about 1:00 PM for the LaGrange Invitational Tournament.

The first pitch of the semi-finals of state play against the South Effingham Mustangs will be at 4:00 p.m. from Richard Bell Field on Monday, May 26th with game 2 at approx. 6:30 p.m. If a game 3 is necessary, it will be played on Tuesday, May 27th at 2:00 p.m.

Canes Bang Out A Region Win over Haralson County

The Canes fronted by good pitching and long ball hitting got another Region 6 victory over Haralson County Thursday night.

On a cold and misty evening Cartersville won 13 - 1 in 7 innings. Offensive fireworks were provided with 3 home runs by Taylor Hightower (Sr), Ben Bridges (Jr) and Josh Daniel (Sr).

Earning the win going 2 innings was Patrick Boiling (Jr), and then followed by Chris Huth (Sr), Ben Bridges (Jr) and Adam Thurman (Jr).

The Canes will face local rival and region foe next week at home on April 8th at 5:30pm vs Cass. There should be a large crowd for most likely the most intense thus far this season.

Canes beat Villa Rica with a very exciting bottom of the 6th... but not what you would expect !!!

Cartersville beat Villa Rica Friday night 8-0 which was not unexpected, but what was not expected was how the Canes last round at the plate for the evening was played out.

While Taylor Hightower (Sr), Donavan Tate (Jr) and Cole Payne (Jr) each pounded a home run for the Canes, the most exciting hit of the evening came from a flair hit by Josh Daniel (Sr) in the bottom of the 6th. Daniel had been inserted in the lineup the inning before and was taking his first at bat of the evening and flared a hit that dropped between the 2nd baseman giving chase and the center fielder. The 2nd baseman continued chase and retrieved the ball on the 1st hop.

Daniel was standing at 1st with a single and then what happened next was something that you may never see again.

The field umpire claimed he did not see the play and was out of position so he then deferred to the plate umpire. After a brief discussion the plate umpire called Daniel out and said the 2nd baseman made the catch.

Cartersville Coach, Stuart Chester immediately went to both umpires to argue the call, but in an effort to back his player was tossed out of the game after arguing to the umpire that he was more concerned with the "kid on base than the score" saying it is not right to take his hit away.

The crowd erupted into support for Daniel and Chester. After that sequence of events, the Canes showed emotion that was at a level not seen in awhile. There was a string of hits, one more run scored and a fired up dugout and crowd.

Several fan observations within the stands all agreed that this moment could be what the Canes need to circle the wagons and have a strong region run and go deep in the playoffs.

This Canes fan certainly is looking forward to it.

Canes Win 2 on Tuesday !!!

The Varsity Canes and the JV Canes both took wins Tuesday night.

Canes Win in 5 !

The Varsity Canes took care of business at Central Carroll High yesterday (3/25) with a 13 - 3 pounding of several pitchers. Cartersville had hits from everyone in the lineup with the offensive leaders being, Taylor Hightower, 3-3, 1BB, 3 RBIs, 2 Runs, Garrison Boston, 2-3, 1BB, 1 SAC , 1 RBI, 2 Runs, Donavan Tate 2-3, 1 Runs. Other Runs scored by Ben Bridges (3), Brac Barton (1), Adam Thurman (1), Parker Rutledge (1) and Cole Payne (2).

Pitching the distance for the Canes was Adam Thurman going 5 innings allowing 4 hits with 7 K's and 3 runs.

The Varsity Canes face Parkview Wed. night (3/26) with a rare 6:30pm start.

JV Canes Win !!!

The JV Canes faced a pesky Marist and won 7-6 at Home. Cartersville was down early 1-5 in the 2nd and began a come back with key hits from after the 3rd inning by Colin Bennett, Colton Montgomery and Levi Mauldin.

In the 6th down 4-6 Justin Croft drove in a key run with a SAC Fly and was then followed by a Double by Tyler Higgins driving in 2 more runs to go up 7-6 in the bottom of the 6th.

Pitcher Levi Mauldin pitched for the win and Justin Croft earned the save .

The Canes (JV) face Gorden Central at Gorden Central Thursday (3/27).

Canes (JV) win over Creekview Grizzles

The Canes (JV) faced Creekview in a win at home on 3/11. Cartersville sent 3 pitchers to the mound with Justin Croft earning the win. Offensively the Canes were lead by Tyler Higgens (2-3, 1 RBI), Levi Mauldin (1 RBI), Justin Croft (2-4, 1 dbl, 2 RBI's, 2 Runs scored). Others runs scored Taylor Greene (2 HBP, 1BB and 1 dbl, 2 runs) and (1 each) by Lane Fraizer, Colin Bennett and Luke Daniel.

Cartersville Places 3rd in LaGrange

The Canes faced a less than competitive Stephens County team as they waxed SC 15 -3. Adam Thurman picked up the win. The Canes had 12 hits in the win. The weather for the night was less than perfect as the cold conditions made for a miserable atmosphere but the weather was much better than the snow earlier in the day.

Cartersville started out strong in Game 1 vs the 2007 Alabama State Champion Culman County. Cartersville pounded Culman 10 - 2 in a long ball contest of Canes players. Canes catcher Taylor Hightower stroked 2 HR's over the leftfield fence (3 and 2 run shots), while DH Hank Stewart hit a long shot over the high center field wall just two batters after Hightowers last. Ben Bridges connected in the following inning on an opposite field solo HR to card the 10th and final run for Cartersville.

Pitching for the Canes was Patrick Boling (4 innings) and Chris Huth (2 innings). Boling allowed only 2 runs in a good performance. Huth pitched the final 2 allowing no runs.

The second game against Brookwood for Cartersville was almost the exact opposite to the first. Brookwood sent 3 very good pitchers to the mound as the Canes scattered only 6 hits (2 HR's by Ben Bridges). Cartersville pitchers allowed only 8 hits but Brookwood seemed to capitalize on all errors and walks by the Canes defense. Cartersville lost 3 - 10.

The Canes are due to play in their final game today against the winner of Stephens County vs Nova (FL). The weather has shortened the tournament by one game for all teams.

Canes (JV) run into extra innings against Milton

It took 9 innings for the Canes (JV) team to earn another win. In a very exciting game, Milton proved to be the toughest team they have faced this year. Milton brought 3 different pitchers to the mound and all 3 proved to be very tough. The Canes won in 9, 8 - 4.

Pitching for the Canes was Justin Croft (So). Croft went 4 innings allowing only 4 hits. Croft then yielded the mound to Ben Dittmer, followed by Levi Mauldin and finally Hunter Horton who earned the win. Canes relief pitchers allowed only 1 hit.

The Canes trailed the entire game until the ninth inning when the bats erupted for a clump of runs.

Justin Croft (3-4, 1hbP, 2 doubles, 1 rbi, 2 runs) smashed a double to deep center to lead off the 9th. Cartersville then sent pinch hitter Luke Daniel (Fr) (1-1, 1 rbi, 1 run) to the plate with 1 out. Daniel scorched a slicing line drive driving in the 1st lead run of the game for the Canes. Daniel then stole 2nd base and moved to 3rd on a dropped 3rd strike as Laine Fraizer (So) reached 1st hustling out the throw by the Milton catcher. Pitcher Hunter Horton earned an important walk loading the bases for Colton Montgomery (So). Montgomery (2-4, 1 double, 3 RBIs) crushed a long line drive to the deepest part of the park for a double easliy clearing the bases for the Canes for some important insurance runs going into the bottom of the ninth.

Horton then took the mound in the 9th and struke out the first 2 batters and earning a ground ball for the final out.

Other offensive contributors in the game were: Ben Venters (Fr) 1-4 with 1 HBP 1 run scored, Taylor Greene (So) 1-4 with 1 run scored, Tyler Higgens (So) 1-5 and Trey Dickson (So) 3-5, 1 double. Fraizer and Horton each scored a run.

The Canes were scheduled to face Woodstock (JV) for their 3rd game in the Sequoyah tournament, but that game has now been rescheduled for Monday with the time TBD.

The Canes JV record is now 2-1.

Canes drop one to Collins Hill

The Canes dropped a close game to Collins Hill Wednesday night at Collins Hill. 9-8

Cartersville basically treated the game as a scrimmage game sending 7 pitchers to the mound in an effort to have arms ready for this weekends battle at LaGrange.

There were some offensive fireworks. Canes, Hank Stewart (DH) and Patrick Boiling went long.

Cartersville heads to LaGrange Friday on a mission to defend their title as tournament champion from 2007.

Canes (JV) rip Northview in 5

The Cartersville (JV) Purple Hurricanes came to play Wednesday night. They made Northview a quick victim of good pitching and all around timely hitting up and down the lineup.

Adam Clark (So) pitched a solid to gain is 1st win of the season. Clark went 2 innings allowing only 1 run from a leadoff walk. After that, he settled into a rhythm and looked to be cruising. Freshman Corey Collumn cleaned up the last three innings spotting the ball well with good defense behind him.

The Canes offense was lead by Justin Croft (So) going 2-3 with a HBP, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Other offensive contributors were Tyler Higgens (So) 1-3 with a BB, 3 RBIs and 1 run scored, Ben Venters (Fr), 1-2 with 2 HBPs and 3 runs scored.

The Canes won in 5 innings at home, 11 - 1.

The Canes face Milton for the 2nd game of the tournament at Milton Thursday night.

Canes Freshman win over Adairsville JV in 3, 15 - 0

The Freshman Canes wasted no time in moving their record to 2-0. After a good win last week over Mill Creek, the Freshman team put 15 runs up in 3 innings on Adairsville High School's JV team.

Cartersville looked good defensively as Ben Dittmer took the mound and picked up a win after last weeks save. Dittmer went 3 solid innings with 4 k's allowing only 2 hits and only 1 walk.

Offensively the Canes were very solid with many contributors. A number of players were able to swing the bat and see some action on the bases. Team leaders for the night at the plate were Luke Daniel, 3-3, BB, 2 RBi's and 1 Run scored; Teigh Dooley, 2-2; Corey Collum, 2-3, 1 RBI and 1 Run scored, Colin Bennett, 1-2, HBP and 2 RBI's; Conner Hart 1-1, 1 RBI.

The Canes both JV and Varsity are due to play today (Home and Away). Check this site later in the day for updates from the weather. As soon as details are available an update will be posted.

Busy Week ahead for Cartersville Baseball

Cartersville Baseball has a very busy week ahead.

Monday 3/3: The Freshman play tonight at Richard Bell Field against the Adairsville JV.

Tuesday 3/4: The Varsity Canes play at Collins Hill, while the Canes JV play at home against Northview to open their Sequoyah Tournament.

Wednesday 3/5: The Freshman play at home against Woodstock

Thursday 3/6: The JV Canes continue their Sequoyah Tournament against Milton at Milton.

Friday 3/7: The Varsity Canes travel to the LaGrange Tournament to face Culman (AL) and Brookwood again.

Saturday 3/8: The Varsity Canes play Flanagan and then a TBD game, while the JV continue their Sequoyah Tournament against Woodstock.

Canes fall to Brookwood

The Canes lost a tough one to Brookwood Saturday on a perfect day for baseball. After going down 4 runs early, Cartersville was able to hold and gain 3 runs on the early Brookwood lead but was unable to push the runs over the top.

Boling was the losing pitcher and relieved after 4 by Chris Huth. Cartersville Pitching gave up only 4 hits (2 HRs) and had 8 hits of their own but were unable to push runners across the plate with some untimely strikeouts and ground balls.

Cartersville faces Collins Hill on Tuesday 3/3 at Collins Hill for a 5:55 start.

Canes win in 10 over Mill Creek

The Purple Hurricanes took a win from the Mill Creek Hawks the largest public school in the state from the highest classification in Georgia High School sports (AAAAA). Final score 3 2 in a comeback. Down 1 in the bottom of the tenth Taylor Hightower earned a walk. Patrick Boling bunted the courtesy runner Wes Dobson to 2nd and reached safely on an errant throw to 2nd trying to get the lead runner Dobson. Parker Rutledge then sac bunted the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Eric Shumate was inserted to run for Boling at 2nd. Adam Thurman struck out swinging bringing Cole Payne to the plate. Payne hit a shot to 3rd with 2 strikes that hit off the third basemans shin easily scoring Dobson on contact and a hustling Shumate for the 3rd and winning run.

The Canes travel to Brookwood saturday for a 1pm start.

(The Canes Freshman beat Mill Creeks Freshman at the same time Friday night. Hunter Horton got the win for the Canes. Sam Howard pitched middle relief with Ben Dittmer earning the save. Offensively the Canes were lead by Luke Daniel (catcher) 1 for 3 with a double with 2 rbis and scored twice.).

Canes Win over Pickens County

Canes win over Pickens county. 20 - 5 Pickens struggled at the plate allowing many base runners. Cartersville did have a HR by Taylor Hightower and scattered several singles and doubles that drove in runs. Cole Payne started the game and was relieved by Wes Dobson on a VERY cold night.

The Canes will face Mill Creek Friday at Richard Bell Field in Cartersville.

It must be getting close to tryouts for CHS Baseball because it is wet and cold. Any long time fan of Canes baseball knows this means the time is close.

It has been a long time since the last pitch was thrown. Many are looking forward to a strong team this year and a good long run. Let's get behind them and see how far we can go.

Cartersville Wins Again over Central Carrollton

Cartersville wins again with a 7 - 0 victory in 7 innings over Central Friday night. A good crowd from Cartersville followed their team to Carrolton and saw a good hitting and pitching performance.

Experience prevails in 7-0 Purple Hurricane win

Although Central knew Cartersville’s tradition and history, Lions coach David Gibbs said his team didn’t allow that to intimidate them.

But even if Cartersville’s reputation didn’t make them nervous, the Purple Hurricane’s experience prevailed in a 7-0 Region 6-AAA ballgame Friday night.

Cartersville coach Stuart Chester said he expects a tough competition each time he travels to Central, especially after the tough loss his Purple Hurricanes suffered to the Lions in 2003.

“This is a place that we come to that it’s hard for us to play,” Chester said. It goes back to 2003 when we got beat. It was a war and that’s what we expect every time we come here.”

That was the year that Central reached the Elite Eight under Coach Rodney Kay.

But in most recent years, Chester has put together solid teams.

His Purple Hurricanes (21-2, 9-0 Region 6-AAA) are back-to-back Region 6-AAA champions and last year reached the quarterfinals of the Class AAA state playoffs before Columbus ended their run.

“They’re one of the top teams in the state,” Gibbs said. “You know that runs are going to be hard to come by and your pitching and defense has got to be as good as it’s ever been to compete with.”

On Friday, the runs were certainly hard to come by for the Lions.

Although Central (4-15, 2-7 Region 6-AAA) mustered only two hits throughout the game, it still managed to get runners on base with walks and hits batsmen.

The Cartersville Hurricanes continue to impress around the nation. For the 1st time the #1 AAA team in the nation is now included in the Top 25 in the Nation overall by rising to #24 from #28.

The Canes face Sandy Creek tonight at Home in another region game.

Canes steal one from Cass

The Canes stole one late in the 7th inning after being down 2-0. Despite Cass having only 1 hit on the Canes through 6, Cartersville trailed before eventually taking the lead after a pitching change. Cass was unable to move any runs across the plate in the bottom of the 7th.

Cartersville will face Harralson County in a make up game this Thursday 4/12 at Richard Bell Field at 5:30pm.

Cartersville head baseball coach Stuart Chester earned his 300th career victory Saturday against Gordon Central, as the Canes won 15-5, in Calhoun.

Chester, who is in his 10th year as the head coach of the Canes, was surprised at a celebration the team had for him when they got back to the Cartersville baseball complex.

"All it means is that I'm getting old," Chester said jokingly.

"Coach Chester provides stability and consistency with this program," said Cartersville principal Jay Floyd. "He knows he has the community's support."

Chester said he's nothing special and that any coach could reach the same milestone in the Canes' program.

"With the type of players we've had in this program and the support we've received in the community, it's easy to get a lot of wins," Chester said.

As the celebration went on, assistant coach Kyle Tucker and senior outfielder/pitcher Lyle Allen snuck up behind Chester with a 10-gallon cooler of water and drenched him.

"I didn't know what hit me," Chester said. "I thought a plane crashed.

"Now, I'm keeping Lyle, but I'm looking for a new assistant coach," Chester said jokingly.

For people outside of the Cartersville program, some might say Chester is mean, whereas his players say he places high expectations on them, and for good reason.

"He expects a lot out of his players," said former Canes' third baseman Tyler Gilreath. "He expects us to do our best and doesn't accept anything less."

"The kids know he has high expectations," Floyd said. "They respond to it as well."

Chester agrees he's hard on his players.

"I'm hard on them, there's no doubt," Chester said. "But I do that for two reasons -- I love these guys and I want them to get better. I want them to use what they learned here later in life."

The relationship Chester has with his players is something they say not many people know about.

"He's a good friend," Allen said. "When we're on the field, it's all about baseball. But off the field, if you need to talk to him, he'll listen. Not a lot of people see that. He shows us that he cares."

Chester said the relationship with the players is the best thing about the job.

"I'd be lying and saying that winning isn't great," Chester said. "But the relationships you develop with these players is the biggest joy of the job."

But Chester hesitates to take credit for the success of the program.

"It's not about me," he said. "It's about these players. They are the focus."

Included in Chester's accomplishments are three state championships, seven region championships, three players playing pro baseball and countless players playing in college.

This year, the Canes have also attained their highest national ranking ever, as they are currently ranked No. 28 in the nation and No. 1 in Georgia's Class AAA.

The Canes moved up to #28 in the Nation today overall and #1 in AAA team in the nation according to Baseball America. Also, the Canes are ranked #2 in the State of Georgia overall only behind #1 AAAAA Kennesaw Mountain High School.

The acolades just keep rolling in. What a program guys. Keep working hard.

The Canes beat McEachern, 2-1 in a night of few hits and good pitching from both teams. Cartersville sent 5 pitchers to the mound in an effort to most likely conserve arms for this coming weekend. Lyle Allen started, and followed with Chris Huth, Ben Bridges, Cody Nix and closed with Benji Farr. The lone run for the Indians came in the 6th off a hit against Nix scoring a previous runner from an error on a ground ball by 3B Cole Payne.

Cartersville's six hits were spaced apart. Lyle Allen with 2 doulbles and with one hit each, Parker Rutledge, Brac Barton, Josh Daniel and Chris Huth.

There are limited directions for Saturdays Game. Google and all the online services show from Cartersville, taking 75, 85, 985 etc.... which is way out of the way.

The best option is Hwy 20 to Canton. Stay on Hwy 20 to Hwy 369. See the pic of Google directions. It will take about 1 1/2 hrs to get there from Cartersville.

It was a great afternoon and evening for tryouts. The weather was nice (mid 50's to mid 40's) and the turn out was good for the 2007 Canes. It was an afternoon of fielding capped off with an evening of running at the end. The weather does not look so good for this afternoon so an indoor tryout might be in store for today.

The weather is nice and the turn out should be high today for the annual rite of passage for many young ballplayers at CHS today. At about 4pm, Richard Bell field with again be alive with the sounds of leather popping, bats pinging and the chatter of players talking it up to each other.

The Canes return a strong starting lineup and look forward to adding new players to this years varsity group. There are strong players coming up from JV and new (future Canes stars) rising in the Freshman class. By Friday or the weekend we should know who the "players" for the 2007 season should be.

The fans are looking forward to a good run this year and hopefully going deep.
